Sea King Radar  –  MERX  –  CF Procurement  –  July  2012 Seeking Sea King Seekers – A Dozen AN/APS-503 Radar Sets For Aged CH-124 Maritime Helicopters  —  MERX  NPP Notice This Notice of  Proposed Procurement is titled "Seaking Spares Depot Stock", the generic term for refilling the spare parts larder. "Seaking" is, of course, a reference Canada's clapped-out CH-124 Sea King maritime helicopters. That "Spares Depot Stock" is slightly misleading since there is only one part type on order - motors to rotate the CH-124's 35-year old maritime surveillance/surface search radar antenna. Back in the mid '70s, the 'Sea King Improvement Program' saw the installation of  Canadian-made pulse-doppler radar sets. The antennae for these sets sat on the dorsal spine of the helicopter just behind the main rotor pylon. Only 50 or so of the AN/APS-503 sets were made by Litton Systems Canada although a similar APS-504 was built for fixed-wing maritime patrol aircraft. Are the motors the same type? Who knows. In any case, spares for that radar are decades old too. Canada is scrounging around for antique radar components because Sikorsky has missed yet another 'firm' delivery date for CH-148 Cyclone Sea King replacements. For reasons known only to itself, the Harper Government has forgiven Sikorsky its late fees to date. They'll have to pay now but will it cover all of the added costs of extended Sea King operation?
